Broken

I don't know if you are into or ever listen to Christian music, but I happen to be a big fan of Matthew West. One of my favorites is Truth be Told. For those of you that are unfamiliar, here are the lyrics:

"Truth Be Told"

Lie number one: You're supposed to have it all together And when they ask how you're doin', just smile and tell them, "Never better" Lie number two: Everybody's life is perfect except yours So keep your messes and your wounds and your secrets safe with you behind closed doors But truth be told The truth is rarely told, no... I say, "I'm fine, yeah, I'm fine, oh, I'm fine, hey, I'm fine" But I'm not, I'm broken And when it's out of control I say it's under control But it's not and You know it I don't know why it's so hard to admit it When bein' honest is the only way to fix it There's no failure, no fall There's no sin You don't already know So let the truth be told There's a sign on the door, says, "Come as you are" but I doubt it 'Cause if we lived like that was true, every Sunday mornin' pew would be crowded But didn't You say church should look more like a hospital? A safe place for the sick, the sinner and the scarred, and the prodigals, like me But truth be told, the truth is rarely told Oh, am I the only one who says... "I'm fine, yeah, I'm fine, oh, I'm fine, hey, I'm fine" But I'm not, I'm broken And when it's out of control I say it's under control But it's not and You know it I don't know why it's so hard to admit it When bein' honest is the only way to fix it There's no failure, no fall There's no sin You don't already know So let the truth be told Can I really stand here unashamed Knowin' that Your love for me won't change? Oh God, if that's really true Then let the truth be told I say, "I'm fine, yeah, I'm fine, oh, I'm fine, hey, I'm fine" But I'm not, I'm broken And when it's out of control I say it's under control But it's not and You know it I don't know why it's so hard to admit it When bein' honest is the only way to fix it There's no failure, no fall There's no sin You don't already know Yeah, I know There's no failure, no fall There's no sin You don't already know So let the truth be told

Why do I like this song so much? Since the first time I hear it, it has been on my heart. What Matthew West is saying far more beautifully than I ever could is that we live in a world where everyone is bottling up their emotions and essentially faking it to get through the day. The worst part is that this has become engrained in our society. When we ask, "How ya doin'?" We don't really expect to hear the truth, we expect to hear, "I'm fine."

In fact this has gotten so bad, many people are chastised for "oversharing" on social media, when it is simply a cry for love or support. I hate to admit that even I have been guilty of this. thinking people should keep their personal drama to themselves, and maybe there is a balance here. but that balance is certainly not present in our society.

Why is this so scary? Because no one has ever healed from bottling their emotions or faking it. Sure, they might be able to tuck it back for awhile. They might even forget about it momentarily, but it doesn't go away and it does NOT HEAL. I find that even when you have successfully submerged these feelings deep in your psyche, they have a way of rearing their ugly heads at the most inopportune times. Times that can lead to great destruction and hurt feelings.

My challenge to you is this. Stop. When you ask someone how they are insist on a real answer. And when someone asks you how you are realize that it is ok to not be fine. It is ok to be broken and need others to be put back together.
