Snow Day

I don't know what it is like in your part of the world right now, but Tulsa, Oklahoma is a beautiful icy disaster about to be blanketed with snow! Unfortunately generally speaking, this type of weather is usually accompanied by lots of complaining and, even worse, plenty of misfortune. Not only are people unhappy to be stuck at home, they can also fall victim to car accidents and icy falls. Although it is an aesthetically beautiful time, it is generally not the happiest time.

It is, however, the perfect time to practice some cognitive reframing. For those of you not psychologically inclined, cognitive reframing is a technique primarily used in therapy to help create a new and different way of looking at a situation, person, or relationship by changing its meaning. It's a strategy therapists frequently use to help clients look at situations from a slightly different perspective, usually a more positive perspective.

While this technique is usually used in therapeutic settings, cognitive reframing is also something that you can do at home or really anytime you experience distorted or negative thinking. It can be helpful to have a therapist's assistance, particularly if you are caught in a negative thought pattern and don't feel comfortable or competent reframing on your own.

The primary concept behind reframing is that the frame through which a person views a situation determines their point-of-view. When that frame is adjusted, the meaning changes and thinking and behavior often change along with it.

Another way to understand the idea behind reframing is to imagine looking through the frame of a camera lens. The picture seen through the lens can be changed to a view that is closer or further away. By slightly changing what is seen in the camera, the picture is both viewed and experienced differently.

Instead of whining about the cold and ice, see this as a beautiful and unique opportunity to experience the joy of cognitive reframing. Some suggestions...

Isn't this an amazing day to sit by the fireplace? Ooh, let's make s'mores!

How about some cocoa and marshmallows?

Isn't it beautiful outside?

Today is the perfect day for a snow angel!
