Feeling stressed? You are not alone!
Research suggests that uncertainty leads not only to stress, but unmanageable stress that can result in anxiety and depression.
For me, I have never lived in a state of greater uncertainty. Although we all have opinions, some stronger than others, none of us really have a clue what's going to happen or what the right decision truly is. We are all just doing what feels best for us and our loved ones in the moment and hoping for the best.
Research further suggests that having the ability to not only plan but complete the plan leads to greater life satisfaction and happiness. While none of us currently possess the ability to plan the way we used to, I would like to offer a few techniques that I plan to try in an attempt to alleviate the soul-crushing stress of uncertainty (yes, I am feeling it too).
Create a daily to do list and complete it. This list does not have to be exhaustive and you can absolutely include tasks like take a shower or get the mail. The important part is to feel accomplished. That alone will help to keep a healthier, more positive mindset.
Create a team for a project. Teamwork is an essential part of the human experience. It fosters relationships and brings us closer. It doesn't need to be a big project. For example, I have friends helping me make sure that Carina (my daughter) has an amazing 13th birthday despite the state of the world. I am relying on friends and family to make a cake, decorate, and otherwise coordinate a perfect day. This will deepen our friendships.
Be proactive rather than reactive as much as possible. If you see a situation coming on the horizon, do your best to make a decision before emotions take over. When we respond to anything in an emotionally charged fashion, we run the risk of damaging relationships, even permanently.
Writing a happiness blog during such an uncertain time has been challenging. I truly hope that these tips can help keep you in a happier, more balanced place. We need to rely on each other now more than ever!
